The author chosen to write this first ever
book on the life of El Shaddai's Servant Leader is Brother Mariano "Nick"
Roa Logarta.
Brother Nick was born on December 02, 1928
in Cebu City. He is married to Lita Torralba with whom he has
seven
children, namely: Luis, John, Jorge, Margarita, Michelle, Nanette
and Nicky (deceased)
Brother Nick is a legal luminary. He
finished his law degree from Manuel L. Quezon University in 1952 and he
pursued a special graduate course in London School of Economics and
Political
Science in 1955 to 1957.
Brother Nick has distinguished himself in
various fields. He is a journalist, a well-respected politician,
a diplomat and a legislator of note.
In the field of journalism, he was a director
of the City Hall, Congress and National Press Clubs of the Philippines
(1949-1952); President of the Political Writers Association of the
Philippines
(1953-1954); and President of the Senate Press Club (1948-1955).
He was a political reporter at the Manila
Chronicle from 1947-1955; a columnist at the Times Journal ("Quorum
of One" from 1984-86); Manila Times ("Matter of Opinion" from
1987-1988); and Newsday ("Matter of View" from
1988-1990).
He was the author of the following books:
"The Filipino Cockpit" (1984); "The Sabah Legacy" (1986);
and "Theory and Practice of Parliamentary Government"
(1992).
He was the regular host and producer of "Challenge
and Response", a widely acclaimed television program from 1994 to
1997.
He was the publisher of "Philippines and World
News Review" from 1994 to 1997.
In the field of public affairs,he was the principal
political consultant to Senator Gil J. Puyat (1954-1956; 1959-1961) and
a Special Assistant to President Ramon Magsaysay (1956-1957).
Brother Nick was the youngest member of the
cabinet of President Carlos P. Garcia. He was his Acting
Executive
Secretary from 1960 to 1961. Prior to this, he was the official
spokesman
of the government on such nationalist issues as the "Filipino First
Policy" and the Sabah Claim, in addition to his being the official
spokesperson of the Nationalista Party from 1958-1961.
Of late, Brother Nick was a Special Consultant
to the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1992 to 1998.
He remains the Secretary-General of Pusyon Bisaya and the Chairman of
its
Executive Committee.
As a legislator, he has carved a name in the
field of legislation when he was chosen as the Opposition Floor Leader
of the Interim Batasan Pambansa from 1979 to 1984.
As a diplomat, he was Press Attache in the
Philippine Embassy in London from 1957 to 1959, at the same time
accredited
as such to Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
From 1966 to 1969, he was Minister and
Consul-General
to Singapore and later, the Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs from
1969 to 1972.
Brother Nick, at present, busies himself as
the head of his own consulting firm, the Logarta Associated
Consultancies,
and his law firm, the Logarta, Cagatan & Associates.
