REPUBLIC ACT NO. 709


 


REPUBLIC ACT NO. 709 - AN ACT DECLARING OBLIGATORY THE TEACHING OF SPANISH IN ALL COURSES OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES IN THE PHILIPPINES



(REPEALED BY  REPUBLIC ACT NO.  5182)

Section 1.    The teaching of Spanish is hereby declared obligatory in all universities and colleges, public and private, and all students shall be required to complete twelve units at least, in the said subject: Provided, however, That this shall not include students who, before the approval of this Act, have already obtained units in other foreign languages in order to satisfy existing requirements regarding other foreign languages, in which case said students can continue studying said language until such requirements shall have been fully satisfied. 

Section 2.    No collegiate course in any public or private college or university shall be opened or maintained, unless Spanish is included in their program of teaching.

Section 3.    The Secretary of Education shall take immediate steps to carry out the provisions of this Act, including the promulgation of such rules as may be necessary and the adoption of disciplinary measures to put this Act into effect.

Section 4.    This Act shall take effect beginning with the school year 1952-1953.
