                   TITLE 30--MINERAL LANDS AND MINING
 
                CHAPTER 1--UNITED STATES BUREAU OF MINES
 
Sec. 8. Additional mining experiment stations and mine safety 
        stations authorized
        
    The Secretary of the Interior is hereby authorized and directed to 
establish and maintain in the several important mining regions of the 
United States and the Territory of Alaska, as Congress may appropriate 
for the necessary employees and other expenses, under the United States 
Bureau of Mines and in accordance with the provisions of sections 1, 3, 
and 5 to 7 of this title, ten mining experiment stations and seven mine 
safety stations, movable or stationary, in addition to those established 
prior to March 3, 1915, the province and duty of which shall be to make 
investigations and disseminate information with a view to improving 
conditions in the mining, quarrying, metallurgical, and other mineral 
industries, safeguarding life among employees, preventing unnecessary 
waste of resources, and otherwise contributing to the advancement of 
these industries. Not more than three mining experiment stations and 
mine safety stations authorized in this section shall be established in 
any one fiscal year under the appropriations made therefor.

                         Change of Name

    ``United States Bureau of Mines'' substituted in text for ``Bureau 
of Mines'' pursuant to section 10(b) of Pub. L. 102-285, set out as a 
note under section 1 of this title.

                      Admission of Alaska as State

    Admission of Alaska into the Union was accomplished Jan. 3, 1959, on 
issuance of Proc. No. 3269, Jan. 3, 1959, 24 F.R. 81, 73 Stat. c16, as 
required by sections 1 and 8(c) of Pub. L. 85-508, July 7, 1958, 72 
Stat. 339, set out as notes preceding section 21 of Title 48, 
Territories and Insular Possessions.
